Nepali Heritage Week

The Nepali-Canadian community reached a historic milestone through a collaborative effort to officially recognize its deep roots and contributions in Toronto. City Councillor Neethan Shan, representing Scarborough—Rouge Park Ward 25, spearheaded a landmark initiative to proclaim April 10th to 17th, 2026, as Nepali Heritage Week.

This period was specifically chosen to align with the vibrant celebrations of the Nepali New Year, marking a time of cultural renewal and community pride.

A Historic First for the Community

This proclamation served as the first initiative of its kind in Canada to formally acknowledge the cultural, social, economic, and political impact of the Nepali community. Councillor Shan moved forward with this request following advocacy from several key organizations, including the Nepalese Canadian Community Services (NCCS).

To ensure the initiative was community-driven, a Virtual Community Forum was held on March 24, 2026. This session allowed residents and community leaders to discuss the significance of the proclamation and mobilize support through formal letters to the City of Toronto.

The official recognition of Nepali Heritage Week carries profound significance for several reasons:
