NCCS Leads Historic Initiative for Nepali Heritage Month Act, 2026

The Nepalese Canadian Community Services (NCCS), under the leadership of President Sudarshan Sapkota, proudly led the historic initiative advocating for the introduction of the Nepali Heritage Month Act, 2026 (Bill 111) at Queen’s Park. MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam officially introduced the bill with support from fellow MPPs Alexa Gilmour and Liz Wojcik. The proposed legislation calls on the Government of Ontario to permanently recognize April as Nepali Heritage Month across the province. This milestone achievement was made possible through the continued advocacy, community engagement, and leadership efforts of NCCS and President Sudarshan Sapkota, who have been working tirelessly to promote recognition of the Nepali community and its contributions to Canadian society. Through meetings, community collaboration, and ongoing discussions with elected officials and community stakeholders, NCCS played a leading role in bringing this important initiative forward. The proposed legislation aims to celebrate the rich culture, traditions, language, history, and achievements of Nepali Canadians while strengthening multiculturalism and inclusion across Ontario. Speaking at the press conference held at Queen’s Park, NCCS President Sudarshan Sapkota emphasized the significance of this recognition for both present and future generations. “This recognition is not only about celebrating our heritage today, but also about ensuring future generations grow up with pride in their identity, culture, and contributions,” he shared during the event. The bill recognizes the growing presence and contributions of the Nepali community throughout Ontario, including in the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, London, Windsor, Hamilton, Guelph, and Kitchener-Waterloo. It also acknowledges Nepal’s rich cultural diversity, languages, and important cultural celebrations observed during the month of April. NCCS extends heartfelt appreciation to MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam and supporting leaders for working together with the community to advance this meaningful initiative. NCCS also thanks community organizations, volunteers, youth leaders, media representatives, and supporters who continue to stand united in promoting Nepali heritage and identity. This historic step reflects the power of community collaboration and leadership. NCCS remains committed to advocating for recognition, inclusion, and opportunities that empower the Nepali Canadian community across Ontario and Canada. Nepalese Canadian Community Services (NCCS)
