ABOUT
Nepali Mela 2010, The Himalayan Festival is an annual one day outdoor public event to be held at Nathan Philips Square of the Toronto City Center on 22 August 2010. The festival showcases various facets of Nepalese culture such as folk dances, ethnic costumes, and varieties of Nepalese cuisine, arts and songs. The event aims to bring together people in Toronto and provide a platform for all of us to experience and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Nepal. It also creates a space to build inter- cultural linkages and add to Toronto's multicultural spirit.
Since the inception of this annual event in 2006, it has been attended by over a thousand people every year. The "Mela" will once again rekindle the traditional Nepali practice of a 'market day'. The stage will entertain the crowd with cultural dance and songs from upcoming Nepali artist living in Toronto. Well known Nepali restaurants will serve delicious Nepali food and popular Nepali retail stores will showcase their collection of exclusive Nepali handicraft. A plethora of resource booths will offer insights into the different facets of Nepal and various organizations working for Nepali people in Nepal and Canada will provide a deeper understanding of their worthy projects. Photos and painting exhibition, and interactive music workshop, face and "mehndi" painting will add to the variety. This event significantly promotes the youth in the Nepalese community like our local musicians, photographers or entrepreneurs. The Tourism Board of Nepal expresses its support for this event by providing promotional, cultural materials. Above all, the City of Toronto provides us an open public space as significant as the Nathan Philips Square to express, celebrate and represent our culture and our community.
